Default Homemade Transmission Gear Lamp!

Hey fellas, I figured this would be a good place to start this thread. It's a lamp I built over the last week or so with old transmission internals from my '94 Civic CX. I used many tools in building it. I had to grind, weld, drill, jb weld, superglue, solder and file.

My intention was to have the gears use their original needle bearings so they would actually spin after being assembled. This turned out to be pretty easily done and is worked out perfectly.

Every part is out of the transmission apart from a few small details (and obviously the electrical parts).

There's a bunch of photos, they should speak for themselves.

If you want to link to this thread or share these photos on other boards please PM me! I'm cool with it, I'd just like to know!

Enjoy!

Unbolt tranny.

Split tranny.

Open it up! Remove a bunch of bolts to remove stacks.

Remove the stacks!

Put all your parts on the floor and stare at them for a minute.

Using a vice and a few 2x4s, clamp, hammer, beat and smash all your parts off the shafts.

Clean all your parts at least twice with some good degreaser.

The shaft to be used for the main structure of the lamp.

Brainstorming...

Yeah I know... you don't need to say anything.

Welded parts shown upright.

Fully assembled.

For scale purposes.

I had to grind a channel wide enough for the cord to sit in...

...Like this!

A bolt from a Lexus V6 crank main cap that I cut in half and drilled.

This bolt.

Used JB weld inside of the drilled bolt to hold the pull chain, had to prop it up to center the chain in the bolt.

Bottom of lamp shown with thrust washers from the same Lexus V6.

Thrust washers superglued to bottom of lamp to "sandwich" cord into the slot I ground out.

Lamp held upside down for the superglue to dry.

The purpose of the thrust washers.

Laying on it's side.

Wiring!

Self explanatory.

Can anyone spot why I had to unscrew the wires and re-do them?

That is an awesome lamp. I wont lie, I would probably by one!

Just as a curiosity, do you think you would make other ones and sell them? I know that people make scrap metal art all the time and sell them at craft shows. I'm sure some fellow gear heads would really love a lamp like that.

I'll definitely make different styles with car parts but I've never sold anything I've made, I'd definitely consider offers on specific ideas though.

I love the idea! And the execution. Definitely inspiring...

What degreaser & process did you use?

Thanks! I first wiped off any oil I could see on each part, then used a mayonnaise jar about 3/4 filled with varsol to immerse each part (small enough to fit) and shook the jar around with the lid on for about 10 seconds, I lifted each part out with a magnet stick. After the varsol I took the parts to the big sink downstairs and scrubbed them with a bristly brush using diluted orange cleaner. I found it was most effective using the hottest water my hands could handle (no pun intended), the oil seemed to come off very easily.

Cool! It involves quite a bit of drilling and grinding and hammering, but you'll figure it out.
