Default Fixing hole in frame

As stupid as it was, I drilled a hole in my crx drivers side frame rail to route my intercooler piping. Its about 3" diameter. Can I weld a square metal plate over each side or should i cut a round plate and weld it in where the hole is. Also I have a cheap mig wellder. Will this suffice? Thanks

I am assuming this is in the very front of the frame rail?

If so...
I think you could keep the hole if you took a peice of 3/16" wall pipe with a inner diameter larger than the outer diameter of whatever charge tubing your using. Then weld the pipe directly to the frame or with with squares with holes cut out on both sides. This should be plenty strong enough and still allow you to pass the tube through.

Really it shouldn't matter as long as its welded good and solid. If I were doing it i'd cut the plate round about 1/8 small so there's at least 1/16 gap the entire way around that way the weld will penetrate to the other side
