Is this fixable?
haha, i just fixed a motor cylce engine that was similar to that except it extended half way around the whole edge and included some bosses that were split in two...this was the engine of course, but same idea along the edge where the cover bolts on to.
if you cant get everything out, just make sure to tape up and cover anything in case you need to grind anything. that way you can keep most if not all debris out. i would still try and clean it after the repair just in case.

you can weld it with DC and helium and avoid preheating it. Thats how I used to fix thick cast trans casings, cyl heads and blocks. I know not everyone wants to drop the cash on a tank of helium though. Forgot about the seals oops lol. yeah take that out. I've done it with them in on my own parts but not on someone elses.
I have never welded a thing in my life so no, I'm not doing this myself. I'm quite happy to hear it's fixable though. Just got this tranny from a JDM supplier....nice surprise.
There's no way it happened in shipping from the company I bought it from. I figure it was before they got it but who knows. That and I just found out it's a B16 LSD tranny and not GSR LSD tranny. ODD???
