Default Drivetrain Ideas

I'm getting ready to sell my subaru powered bug because im sick of dealing with stupid fragile expensive trankaxle.

So....

Im looking for a new project car. I want a sub 2200 car with 400hp and of course rear wheel drive. Im probably going to get a toyota starlet because its about the cheapest, lightest, rwd platform u can get. I want it to be a street/trackday car that runs on 91 octane. I can buid just about anything but im no baller so im trying to decide on a motor/trans combo. The rear end will probably be a ford 9 inch due to its price and strength.

So i'm looking for a 4 cylinder engine and trans that wont break at that horsepower level. And no rotaries. Engine wise i would like to do a simple rod/piston/turbo build. I would love to use a t5 trans and i know alot of adapters are produced to mate them to differant 4 cylinders but i don't know where to start looking.

Let me know what u guys can think of. I figured there is the most concentration of guys that think about this stuff in this forum.

Good old toyota 3tc will get the power numbers you want, block and crank are next to bullet proof, rods and pistons are cheap, and the head will perform damn good with just little porting.
Plus the motor fits in a starlet pretty well.

an adapter plate is available form BRD or theracingstore to bolt the older celica iron case w50 to the stock 3tc bellhousing. This trans has been into the 9's behind starlets. But I to also am found of good old T5's, and have done some quick and dirty measuring and it looks like a 1" thick piece of aluminum plate would work out well for an adapter.

I have a narrowed 8.8 with 4.56's and 31 spline moser axles in mine, a but liter than the 9" stuff and plenty bullet proof.

Here is mine

and a old picture of the motor

Thats exactly the info i was looking for. I really want something T5 based because i know alot of stockcar guys and can pick up a jerico dog box pretty cheap.

I found http://www.quad4rods.com wich sells ecotec, ztec, and duratech bellhousings for a t5. I have looked into the 3tc for the past starlets i have owned but i really want a 16 valve overhead cam configuration. But im deffinatly going to have to give them another look.

By the way your car is sick. I think i remember u from kp61.net

stock block sr20, headstuds and a good headgasket. BC cams and valvetrain (cheap), gt30r/bw256/t3t4 whatever and if you want a bulletproof tranny buy the mazworx adapter and put a z32 trans behind it. no rebuilding just bolt on stuff and go.

Who built your transaxle??? I have a rancho in my 64 beetle that makes around 260whp. I haven't had any problems with it and I beat the **** out of that car. I take it that you are using a kennedy adapter?

Hold up there boss. You a just using the wrong transaxle. You have several options. Use a 915 from a Porsche, use a bus transaxle that has been built or order a Mendeola box. There are plenty of bug guys out there making way more power than you are and not having tranny troubles. Don't give up just yet, just hunt a little further for good info. The sandrail guys should have a great solution.

Either u haven't put slicks on it yet or your not makin that much horsepower. I agree that u can get an aftermarket mainshaft, treated ring and pinion. sleved and gusseted case and have a good chance of not breaking it but even then your 2000 bucks into a trans that MIGHT stay together. Even the drag guys that do this still shred the gearbox every few races and inspect it. It's more of the money to speed ratio right now for me.

Oh and i built the tranny. And yep a kennedy adapter

I take it your turbo? U have an aftermarket mainshaft in your box? 3.88 r&p? Slicks? what 1/4 time u running?

Im aware of all this its just a money factor. An $8000 mendola tranny in my bug just isn't on the cards

And plus im just bored and want a new project

what about a 3s from an is200 or altezza depending on which country you get it from. its iron block and i think the block supports 800 or so bhp.

If you are planning on turning at all.... 94+ miata. If you manage to blow the trans, the 00+ 6spds bolt right in and are good for power. If you find the limits of the rearend... there are bolt in kits for domestic rearends.... if you get bored... you can just stuff an ls1 in there

From your post and comments... I'm guessing trackday = 1/4mile... but I figured I toss a car in the mix that would provide fun at a 'real' trackday

930 gear box will take what ever you throw at it. Do you honestly believe that you will not destroy parts in some other car? Going fast cost money. It takes strong parts to take the abuse drag racing.

Why not get a miata and throw in a 302. Won't handle for crap but will be cheap and quick in a straight line.

Im not going for a drag car at all. Im talking road courses. Ive been doing nasa hpde's and don't ever really intend to race a class, just have fun.

I don't want to argue about vw transaxles either....ive pretty much made up my mind.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, i will let you guys know what i end up doing

F20c1 is definitely capable of handling 400whp on stock internals. Plus, it revs to 9krpm stock.

That'd be pretty goddamn sweet.....starlet F20c1 turbo powered!

Of course, the venerable SR20DET would work, or you could get exotic and do RB25DET

In that case... I stand by the Miata platform. I'll be adding more video to my youtube account after each hpde/track day. It's just a 200hp or so stock 1.6l and it is damn fun to play with on track.

light/rwd/4wheel independant suspension/boost friendly motors/easy trans upgrade/bolt in kits for rear end upgrades/decent aftermarket etc....

Go 1jz power. My sc300 is making roughly 450whp+ off 18psi +gt40 turbo. Completely stock motor.

80's Ford Mustang SVO. 2.3l engine that has a big aftermarket behind it. With slight mods you can throw on a Volvo 16v head or work the **** out of the stock one. I've seen these cars with under $4000 in to them run 10's and are driven daily.

930 gear box will take what ever you throw at it

true, but the 4spd will limit you in many ways

F20C is the way to go IMHO
Don't get greedy with the boost **** and rev the chit outta it.
