Default downpipe question

is it possible to drive my car with no downpipe? i was planning to drive my car to the muffler shop which is about 1 mile away, to have the welder build me a downpipe with some stainless steel bends and flange that i came across. all i lack on my project to get it on the car are ic pipes, dp and oil feed and return lines. so close! after the holidays for sure! someone please let me know if downpipeless for 1 mile is o.k. or if im just flat out crazy. thanks

uhh..lol i don't know about that man. all of your exhaust would be just shooting into your engine bay...and it would be extremely loud. This is my first post, btw so I am glad to be part of HT, now. I have been on other boards but this is my type of board..all tech, no sections devoted completely to bondo and what not.

im pretty sure you can. only thing is your O2 sensor wont be hooked up. i have heard of people running right out of the downpipe but right out of the turbo is going to be risky expecially if you dont have a tune. if its only a mile, have a buddy tow it in the middle of the night with a truck or just get some exercise and have a bunch of guyz push it (if there are not that many hills) or see if a tow company will hook you up.

Good luck

I dont think the car will like it if the O2 sensor isnt hooked up, obviously you dont want to boost at all if you dont have a tune on it. The turbo with spool pretty damn fast with no exaust at all too.

Youre probably better off towing it or something like that. Or stick you header on and a filter on the throttle bodies just to get it there.....just an idea.

it should be fine if it is under a mile i.e. VERY CLOSE. drive under very low load. its gonna get very hot under there, might even bubble hood paint. I reccomend taking hood off b/c it will melt plastic.

We were doin like 70 or so on a highway in a buddys turbo mr2 and we hit a bump. All of a sudden it got loud and we must have driven with it like that for about 2 miles with engine full hot, under highway loads, at 70mph. We figured we'd stop at the next exit and see what was going on cuz it wasnt that much more loud than exhaust setup he had( straigh pipe) but when he noticed the A/F meter full lean we stopped. It melted the i/c fan. oops.
