Default DIY headers

Hey guys I've got a cracked exhaust manifold and I'm going to buy a set of headers for my d16z6 and I was thinking of cutting the factory exhaust manifold right at the flange and take a drimmel to open up the ports then buy piping and have it welded.
I have access to a welder and pipe bender..
my question is what size piping should i use for the custom header for a stock N/A d16z6 application ..and my other question is what type of header design is best for peak performance.. and sry if this has been covered before
i searched but nothing came up...some pix of custom headers would be nice..
P.S. I know this sounds kind of like a waste of time I know I should just buy a header for it and call it quits but I want to do this just for learning experience..

if your going to build your own header, just spend the extra 20 bucks and get a new head flange as well. dont use the factory flange.

I have a couple of nice custom headers in my shop right now, one's an SMSP that belongs to a friend of mine and the other is an OPM made for an ITA car, CRX Si with a D16A6, it now belongs to another friend of mine. I just have them for dent repair and ceramic coating, but I took some pics for my CRX forum to compare and show what a nice header actually looks like.

SMSP for a NA Z6/Y8 and an OPM for a ITA D16A6:

yeah we used it for our first header on our super stock. then this past season went with the route of filling out the form at burns and made a header using their blue print and wow. what a waste of 40 bucks in the beginning.
