Default D16z6 buggy/sand rail build

A friend and I started this project a few years ago just to see if we could do it, and sure enough, 2.5 years later, its done. The idea is that we wanted to make a honda-powered buggy and we would use a d16z6 as a template motor with the plans to replace it with a boosted b18b, which hasn't happened yet. I will entertain any and all questions and I have not titled the pictures as I feel they are understandable already. I've split the pictures into 5 posts.

Update

The video below shows the very first test drive ever. What you see is an unpainted, unrefined, rattling buggy with no antivibration features, no accessories (except for a fan), and no idea if it will make it. The good news is that it does, and as you can see, Brent is rolling towards the back of that field. Eventually, prior to tearing it apart and painting it, we achieved a top speed of 70mph off-road later on. Later this week, I'll post a video of how it is now, which is blazingly fast in the corners. The loud noise at the end is due to my camera deciding to always pick up high frequency sounds and amplify them to no end.

I will post videos as soon as I can, but rest assured, I do have them. As for the next motor, we plan to go with a turbo b18b. The thing has zero traction issues, and so we're gonna try to optimize the thing, boost the thing, and see where the limit of acceleration starts to light up the tires. At that point, we'll adjust it down a little. It is currently blazingly fast though.

Very cool.

Would getting that thing street legal be very much work?

Which rear coilovers are those? How much rear and front travel is there?

Actually it is street legal now. We started the process in june, and it ended in September. It is actually an easy process as long as you build the thing to be street legal. The reason it took SO long was because the courthouse and insurance companies had no idea how to deal with a fresh, newly built car. In the end, it is a specialty vehicle with 1 mile on the odometer.

The rear suspension setup is tokico blues with old ground control coilovers.

As far as travel goes, there are about 10 inches of travel when the suspension is at full height.

That kicks A$$!!! I have a d16 in my sandrail also, Its running, but I need to do some other things to it to get it ready for the sand. One question...does it do wheelies with the D16 in it? so much to talk about, I'de like to talk to you when I get more time. Awesome!!!!

You need to get some bigger suspension on that thing so you can jump it out in the dunes !

Nah, it won't do wheelies, a thing i'm thankful for when driving it super hard on the road. I live out in rural-ish kentucky, and so naturally there is no sand, but it will jump about anything you want out here...during testing, we had it going 70mph in the field. Of course, we ended up off the trail and getting stung by bees because of it, but it held up. In testing, we did break stuff, but isn't that the point?

Whenever you feel like it or need any help and ideas, feel free to pm me about it, d16sandrail.

I didn't even look at your location and as soon as I seen the pictures on the grass in front of the fence Beechbend popped straight into my head. Those grassy spots in front of the fence seems to be a favorite spot in old Muscle Mustang and Fast Ford, and 5.0 magazines.

Looks great, turbo that sucker though.

Haha, it does look identical to that stretch in front of BeechBend, but it is actually about 30 minutes from Beechbend. Close enough right? We plan to boost a b18b and throw it in that thing someday, but who knows when. There is PLENTY of room for it though.

I've always wanted to do something like this. I was wondering. Is the shift pattern still the same?

Thanks for the compliments fellas, and yes, it does keep the same shift pattern. If you take a good look at the pictures where the new linkage is actually bolted up and ready, you'll see that all we ended up doing was displacing the middle of the thing, and leaving the rest the same, superposition like.

Where abouts are you, Imgoingforit? Back when it was at Import Alliance we still were missing better speaker mounts and a playstation portable. Well, they're in there. Plus the thing is completely road legal now.

i'm curious why you mounted the engine so far back in the frame?

looks like a wicked fun project and makes me wish i'd done it when i had my d16's laying around.

thats the ideal place in a sandrail/buggy. we got more of a buggy with turbo s2000 engine/fortin tranny. fortin tranny is more of a vw type tranny built like a rock so our engine does not quite sit as far back this one here.
