Default Backpurging...how important?

Now I know backpurging the runners on a stainless exhaust manifold is the right thing to do...but how absolutely important to the integrity of the manifold is it?

I am working on my first log manifold and don't have my bottle setup for backpurging. I have everything fitup and tacked up and balked at actually welding it. The fittings are sch40 gapped 1/16" and I will be running two passes. It will be fully penetrated. If i do not backpurge the runners, will I run into problems down the line?

All opinions are welcome!

Thanks

That **** sucks. I can't believe they would even sell that ****.

It is about like smearing mud on the inside of the pipe and then welding it. It will dry up and leave bits and pieces that will not be friendly if they go into your turbo.

Again, this **** sucks!!! Don't use it.

Purge it if you want full penetration...if you want to half-*** the job, go with no gap and do NOT try to get full penetration. That way you will not have globs of **** hanging inside the pipe that can break loose down the road.

My main concern is with the integrity of the manifold. I can still get inside the runners to grind off the sugaring if need be.

Any ideas for a budget back purge setup? I'm low on cash these days. My plan is to eventually get a new bottle and use the 80cf i have now for backpurging, but thats awhile out unfortunately.

tee off your bottle after the reg... then run a small 1/8" poly hose from it, use those push in fittings that are used for air lines...

i hope i made sense.. heh

The flux works fine if you know how to use it, we dont have any problems with it. But of course the purge is the way to go

Your definition of the word WORKS may be quite a bit different than mine.

Wanna post pics of it?

So in the end, if I grind out the sugaring how much will not back purging effect the integrity of the manifold?

I find solar flux to be handy when I'm tacking tubes into place. As long as you're using it on regular exhaust manifolds, not a turbo application, there's nothing wrong with it. Once we get our Lincoln back in (realizing how much their customer service sucks on a $6k + machine ) I'll post up pictures of the backside of a weld using solar flux. Works OK for me when a customer doesn't want to spend the extra $100 or so I'd charge them for an extra bottle to purge a set of headers/exhaust.
