Default YS1 cable trans

Hi there just wondering if anybody knows the difference in the input shaft between the cable S1/J1 and a ys1, are the spline counts different? Is the shaft diameter different or is the lenght different? I have run out of good parts for my J1 and want to switch to the YS1 so I can stay cable and still get parts. I have access to two transmissions that have no markings on them, they are 24 spline and have two bolts on the bottom for the shift rail detent ***** (my J1's do not) does any one know if the shift rail detent ball bolts are a sure sign they are YSI boxes?

shaft diameter is different

USDM 90-91/JDM B16 A1/J1/S1/Y1 = small spline

If it is a cable B series with external detents it is a 92-93 YS1. The 88-91 B series have internal detents. Both shafts have 24 splines but there is about 1 mm difference in the spline section shaft diameter.

Just to clarify for myself, since I just tore apart a cable B series tranny for a friend. The casing has been painted and there are no external codes to reference what tranny it may be.

On the outside of the case there are no spring bolts/bearings to remove. The bearings / detents are on the shift forks on the inside of the tranny. So if I read this thread correctly, this tranny should be a small shaft 88-91 model tranny?

Correct

The 88-91 has internal detents (spring loaded steel ball) and the 92-93 has external detents like the hydro B series.

This is the first cable tranny I have ever torn into in my life since messing with my first Honda in 1996. Always messing with B series hydro or K series these days.

I am sitting here trying to count gears and figure out gear ratios. by the looks of the sealant on the casing, this tranny has been torn into before. I think we may have a mixture of gears in this particular one.

The original problem was 4th gear. It would not stay in 4th. I think I found the culprit of that. The hub and slider are toast.......

Keep hunting...best cable trans to have I recently acquired one off of craigslist in pretty good shape! Had a broken diff but, cases were good and its a short geared JDM version! I am saving it for my next cable build!

so besides the smaller/bigger spline, what else differs between the 1st gen and 2ndi gen cable trans? im very curious why u couldnt swap these gearsets into each other...cant u just use the appropriate clutch for the spline size?

Pretty much everything IIRC. As far as I'm concerned unless you get a smoking hot deal on a small spline tranny it makes a lot more sense hold out for a YS1, which is A: a better transmission to start with, and B: you can still obtain parts reasonably easily for them. The fact that hydro guts swap into a YS1 case just makes them even more desirable since you can build something like say a cable ITR tranny that just doesn't exist otherwise.

Both the YS1 GSR and LS have the same two bolt holes. To identify which specific model you have, you will need to do a thorough gear tooth count.

92-93 = YS-1 White Sticker (external detents)

89-91 = A1, J1,Y1, Y2, and S1 Gold Sticker (internal detents)

Dear Synchrotech-Transmissions,

LoL I know that I defiantly do have a YS1 transmission. My question is (and please clarify) does your B16A2 LSD's fit in the YS1 transmissions. And again I've seen that they do ... but this buddy of mines is dead set saying that the casing for the YS1 B17 GSR and the casing for the LS YS1 are slightly different and that the B16A2 Diff will only work in the GSR.

Now aren't the YS1 casings the same and wont the B16A2 Diff's fit both GSR or LS. I'm really asking cause either way if I have either or I'm looking for a Diff option.

HELP PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aftermarket B16A LSD's will work in any YS1 case. LS or GSR doesn't matter, the cases are the same.
