Default Solder method for measuring shims?

A buddy of mine has a crx with a L3 si transmission that was starved of oil. I had a parts s40-k4f so we're swapping the gearset into the L3 case. Everything lined up fine. New bearings all around from the synchrotech rebuild kit.

I'm under the impression that we need to remeasure the input shaft shim thickness. I've heard of the solder method. This just involves putting a ring of solder between the lower input shaft bearings and the input shaft itself, assembling the casing. Disassembling and measuring the solder thickness with micrometers. Is this correct? Is there a better way to do this that is suitable for a garage mechanic? Am I an idiot?

You can't use the S40 1/2 gears or final drive in the L3.

To answer your question, follow the Helms manual.

everything seems to work fine. What would be the problem with s40 in L3?

The shafts are too long.
