Default question about testing functionality of a transmission..

hi i just bought a used "supposedly 2001 gsr transmission" "no vin or model stickers on it anymore" from a reputable person on the for sale forums.

Just giving it the "okay" from looking at it, it looks fine, but i was just trying to test some simple functions and am not quite seeing what i expect..

Laying in my garage is a LS transmission with a broken 3-4 gear fork.. while sitting on the ground i can push the shifter pin in and out into different gears, while in these gears i can manually turn the "main shaft" - i presume thats what it can be called.. and i will see the gears in the differential turn slowly..

Though when i try that with this new "working" transmission i just bought, i slowly turn the shaft while in different gears and i am seeing no sign of the gears in the differential turning, does this mean the transmission i just bought is bad?

The only difference between the two is that the LS transmission has the speed sensor it, though i don't think thats a related cause. what do you guys think?

So the differential isn't spinning in any gears? Have you tried putting the gear selector in neutral(middle postion) then using a screw driver or something where the bitch pin goes to twist it either left or right and then push in or pull out to make sure all that is smooth?

yes, on my ls transmission, i stuck a screwdriver shaft through the hole where the bitch pin goes, i couldn't necessarily get it to twist left to right as i assumed it was supposed to, but i guess i didn't try it once in nuetral now that i think of it.. but either way i got it to slide in, neutral, and out, and i tried it in all 3 and never saw the diff spin, but i will try it again sometimes soon.. been nasty sick today, don't feel like going out there.. thanks for the idea though..
