Default OBX LSD

I always read they are junk, people post pics of them all busted up etc etc etc... has anyone actually used one though that has personally set it up, and knows it was set up properly and still had it fail?

Not did you pay a shop to do it and their "qualified guy" who makes 14$ an hour did it after a hard night... but you personally- have you ever set one up, NEW and had it fail knowing fully that it was 100% the parts fault and not improper installation?

I haven't, but I know Mista Bone installed a bunch of them (like 40+ IIRC) and the early ones were ok, but then a few years ago they had so many manufacturing problems he just wouldn't even bother with them anymore. I remember seeing a video he took of the runout one one, so bad you could see it with your eyes. I think it's pretty safe to say they're junk.

Yes. They suck.

Not my personal transmissions, but customers that I built before I quit installing them. I believe I am qualified to answer this. See the thread I made in this section titled "MFactory LSD review part 1."

A. runout is terrible
B. the diff end play is way out of spec.
C. half the time the cap screws are loose, stripped, cocked sidways, ect...
D. the two halfs are not bolted square.
E. the washers are installed improperly
F. i have seen pieces lock together, break, fall apart even after upgrading bolts and spring washers.

want me to keep going? i have broke two, have had friends break 4 of them.

I wish someone would post saying that OBX has a conscience and that they all of a sudden started building good LSD's but I don't see that happening. I just completely rebuilt my ys1 gsr with carbon synchros, new main shaft, new 3rd gear set. I also purchased an OBX LSD, after taking the advice from a knowledgeable friend. He said he ran the LSD in his k20 hatch with no problem at all. The hatch was all motor pushing over 250 and saw its fair share of track time. So the other day I called the company I ordered the syncros from inquiring about what fluid to run with the synchros and I mentioned the LSD. The professional warned me of the LSD and recommended not installing it. I went into a mode of not knowing what I should do, rebuild the LSD carefully and to the greatest extent or call it a loss and save my rare transmission. The transmission is currently apart and ready for assembly and this LSD rests on my shop bench awaiting the call.

You can take it apart, replace the washers and bolts inspect the rest of it for casting flaws and check the runout and see what it looks like. If it looks alright you might be ok installing it. If it looks bad cut your loses on it. MFactory is really the way to go.

I understand I would have to correctly replace the washers, replace the bolts with the addition of thread lock, possibly bore the sun gear after pressing the bearings on, and inspect for burred edges on the inside. But I'm not sure what runout is.

And also 94eg8, do you actually know someone who has an upgrade LSD in their car?

Runout is basically a measure of how far off center something is. When you have a diff with runout it spins like an oval.

I know guys semi locally who have run MFactory in the past. Not well, but I know them. I haven't done any aftermarket LSD installs. The biggest reason being A, there is almost no local Honda scene, and B, there's not much money floating around the area. If I was going to buy an aftermarket LSD I'd be buying an MFactory unit though. It's pretty hard to find anyone with anything bad to say about them, and for what they are they're pretty reasonably priced.

Edit: I was looking for this earlier, OBX carnage:

Thanks for the video. If I could go back, I would go mfactory but I'm sitting here with this LSD that the jerk on amazon wouldn't take back, even with the 25% restocking fee. My lsvtec will not see over 200 whp and I normally drive like a grandma. I wonder what the chances are of it messing up without hurting my internals? If I installed it and it messed up, I wouldn't be quite so disappointed, unless it demolishes other internals. If all I would have to do is open my tranny and replace it with my stock one, then at that point I would be satisfied cutting my losses.

if you want your car to pull all over the road and run chunks of metal through your gear set use the obx... its your call but im telling to dont do it.

I'd run an OEM helical over an OBX. Cut your losses.

Yeah I just cracked it open for the first time. Everything seemed in place correctly but when I manually tried to spin the internals by hand, there was no smoothness at all. In fact it jammed up at times. I'm not sure if that's relevant to its operation while assembled, but the teeth of all the gears are machined poorly. I wish there was something I could do with this thing.
