Default help!

I am in the process of reassembling my 93 GSR transmission after replacing the entire third gear set. The mainshaft binds using the original shim from the case. I want to measure the clearances so I can order the right sized one however I do not understand how I am supposed to measure the "A" clearance as seen below. With the case together how are you supposed to get in there and measure that clearance?! I had no problem finding the "B" clearance. I have rechecked my mainshaft assembly and I do not think it is the problem. Please help this is driving me nuts!

how does that work? Also I think this clearance is going to be a lot bigger than you find in engine bearings.

Plastiguage is a really thin piece of plastic, any parts store has it, make sure you buy the one that will cover your clearance needs. (they have different thicknesses). You will cut your self a small piece and put it where the book tells you to measure the clearance. Then assemble the case (dont bother with the hondabond). Disassemble and inspect the plastiquage, it will be smashed down. Compare the width of the smashed plastiguage with the chart on the plastiguage package. It will tell you your clearance.

ok i figured out how to measure it but I am coming up with the mainshaft being higher than the edges of the case. I installed it without the thrust shim and oil guide plate. It is supposed to be fully assembled right? I also did not have the spring washer on it but I did have the 28mm thrust washer.

IMO mainshaft thrust clearance shouldn't have changed after replacement of 3rd gear.

when the case was together, did you hear the c clip on the countershaft snap into place?
did you tap the mainshaft towards the outboard side of the tranny housing making sure the bearing was fully seated against the thrust shim?

when checking clearance "A".... you've removed the hex head plug on the case and made sure the bearing is fully seated?

yes all of the above

the mainshaft still binds when in the case alone when I put the halves together.

Does anyone know if the spacer coller that goes on 4th gear is supposed to have a certain orientation? It looks the same either way.
