Default 2006 Accord Trans slipping...is it toast?

I have a 2006 Honda Accord EX-L V6. The car has 165,000 miles on it. While the engine oil has been changed religiously, I have never changed the trans fluids. Never.

Recently, the trans has started to slip. For the last 200 miles, when you start the car initially in the morning, it takes 3 to 5 seconds before it will begin to move. Now, within the last 20 miles, it has started to significantly slip when starting from stop lights. And the check engine light has come on.

I have pulled the codes. They are P0700, P0741 and P2138.

The trans has never leaked fluid. It reads full when checked, but it is brown. (Go figure.)

IS my trans toast? What would you do with it? Honda service? Local trans shop? The car basically can't be driven. I will struggle with it to get it to the local shop that is only 3 miles from my home. Would a 1X or 3X fluid change solve the issue? Is there a trans fluid filter than might be clogged?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Honda will want $3500 to swap in a reman. tranny. Brown fluid = toast, done, kaput.

The V6 Autotragic is already a weak design. Look at all the issues for 98-04ish Accords and Odysseys even with proper fluid changes.

I believe there is a manual swap for that, will definitely fix the issue , There are probably lots of how to's on line how to do the swap, whats needed etc, on the autos the solenoid valves fail, the wet clutches don't get enough hydraulic pressure, slip, and burn up. Same thing that happened on my POS 98 civic more door. It wasn't worth the trouble to do the manual swap, since so many thing were wrong with it. Honda made some really shitty autos for quite a few years

Mista Bone - Thanks for the input.
lostforawhile - Are you talking about swapping the A/T for a manual? With error codes it's showing, it refers to the solenoid valves? Can they be simply replaced or are they internal. Sorry...I build houses not cars.

when the valves fail, the hydraulic pressure is reduced to the wet clutches, they can't clamp with enough pressure,so they slip and burn up, this is why you have burned fluid, once everything burns up, the tranny has be completely disassembled and rebuilt, that stuff gets into everything. These transmissions dont work like an old fashioned GM or Ford transmission, they electrically shift gears like a manual, using hydraulic pressure to engage the gear sets, when that pressure is reduced, usually by **** in the screens of the valves, really bad things happen, this is well known issue, not just in accords, but civics as well

If you don't know a lot about cars, you wont be able to do a transmission swap, it's a job, even for someone who is used to that kind of modification, everything will bolt in, but it involves finding a good manual, then a doner car, and getting everything needed off of the doner car. Unfortunately that's your only solution to permanently fixing the issue, the automatics in those cars are garbage, great car, shitty transmission, I would do the manual swap, I wouldnt even try to find a used transmission to change it. It's crap shoot that you will have exactly the same problem

Thanks for all of your input. IT sounds like you rebuild these things for a living?? Is that so?

Oh, and what does a rebuild of one of these cost?? KBB only says the car is worth $5,346 as a trade in. To have to put $2 or $3K into a trans repair does not really make my day. And you are telling me that there is absolutely nothing I can do to get another 50 good miles out of it - right??

i dont rebuild them for a living, i hate autos, those transmissions are well known to be junk, serious issue for Honda, I wouldnt put a bunch of money into fixing it, they are just flawed in design and will fail again. I would like to find one eventually with one of these bad trannys and convert it to manual, I can probably find one cheap, that V6 always should have had the manual behind it anyway, but too many projects. Those autos are going to doom most of a generation of accords to the scrap heap

So I spoke with the local Trans shop today. Somebody that I believe is honest and would do a nice job. I have three alternates. #1) Remanufacture from Honda. Mista Bona called it - $3500. #2) Rebuild what I have - $2500 w/ warranty. #3) buy a used trans from a bone yard with 99K miles on it with no warranty but guaranteed to run for 1000 miles - $1900 - $2000. (Trans cost is $900-$1000 and the labor / fluids = $900-$1000.)

As my intent is to trade the car in just as fast as the dealer can find what I am looking for, I believe I will take the used trans with 99K on it.

One question that I just can't figure out? Why would any trans designer / engineer put a filter on the inside of a trans in a place where it can not be gotten to without a complete teardown?? And it's Honda? Why would they be so dumb? Wouldn't accessibility be like the first thing they think about so that it can be maintained?

the issue is most of the autos in these cars are junk, so buying a used one, you were warned. It's a design defect, the dealer isnt going to be fooled, they know how bad they are , Honda had to a fix a bunch of them
