worth upgrading from 4-5 wheel studs
currently have a teggy GSR and retuning it,hoping to push about 300WHP. about how much hp/torque can 4 studs take, and when (if at all) would i have to upgrade to 5?
weekend warrior that i might mess around on the track with. nothing serious racing just having fun with friends and getting a 1/4 mile time.
In relation to the studs, you need to consider the shear stress on the bolts.
From what I can gather on the net:
The shear capacity of a M12 bolt is between 26.2 kN to 32.4 kN.
Equal to 5889 to 7283 lbs of force.
So the shear off 4 lugs would require a tremendous amount of force.
Main reason I went to a 5-lug is a larger wheel bearing, bigger brake options and somewhat of a better race rim selection. But with companies like fastbrakes and other aftermarket brake suppliers, you can fit big brakes on 4-lugs just the same.
If you have a chance to pick up a 5-lug swap for a good price, get it. Their getting hard to find in good condition. If all else, buy it, store it in your garage, and in a couple years sell it for a profit.
Otherwise, put the money into suspension and tires. Their going to have a much bigger role to play in transferring your torque to forward momentum.
cool. wasnt sure because the gsr has a 4 lug design and the ITR has a 5 one so is that really just redundency/cosmetic/the itr being special as opposed to a performance thing?

people just do 5 lug for the wow factor.. there is a billion set of wheels for 4x100 and tons of big break kits for 4x100 so i think there isnt any problem for that is just all for looks and its so called "baller" status.. to me its just one more lug nut id have to take off to get my wheels off..
