Default Wierd shifter question (probably easy)

Quick question, I was driving earlier tonight and almost immediately I noticed it was warm around the shift ****, i felt further down and the actual shift lever was hot as hell. Is this just heat dissapation from the exhaust being so close or is something wrong. I have driven this car 2 years and not noticed but might just be me I dunno. Also it was warm from right when I started the car, but I was out a hour earlier driving on the freeway for around 45 min. This all took place around 10 at night and it was fairly cold. And ideas would be helpful.

*crossing fingers for the exhaust heat answer*

Thats what it sounds likes to me also.Crawl under and check it out or pull out your shifter console and look in the whole.

Hmm today I drove it, not on the freeway but for about 30 min again. Didn't notice a thing this time. I'll double check the heatshield tonight but I was under there like a week ago and everything looked fine. Nothing is hitting that I can hear or feel, but I'll know when I look I guess. The day before I noticed the heat I had to drive down and back a 2 mile gravel road, might have banged something up there.

I had that same problem, you'll notice it the most after you's been idling(stationary) or in stop and go traffic. When you drive at a good speed the air moving under the car acts as "cooling air".

Checked underneath, nothing out of the ordinary and I haven't smelled an exhaust leak. Maybe its partly due to the warmer air at nights lately. I dunno and as long as I'm not getting shocked or nething from touching it I'm gonna leave it be.
