Default why not obd2?

i driving home yesterday when i started to contemplate. why do all these ecu companies reprogram or replace obd1 ecus with great things, but when it comes to obd2 ecus there is nothing really out there. when i say nothing i mean hondata only uses obd1 and same with zdyne. and zdyne still hasn't even done 94-95 integras yet. what makes obd2 so hard. i have a 96 gsr and would like nothing more than to put a standalone ecus but people like zdyne don't even come close to producing what i need and for hondata i'd have to spend ~300 on the ecu and another ~200 on the adapter cable. so how can these people trumpet performance chips but totally leave out ecus manufacted after 96. i mean come on it's been five years. well thanks for the answers. hopefully my curiosity is satisfied.

g-force engineering can reprogram the obd2 computers and i thought someone else could too. i really don't know why obd2 is such a pain, i think maybe because there is much more going on w/ obd2 in terms of monitering basically everything. blame the smog police for it.

The OBD 2 ecu's can be modified just as easily as the others, it's the cost of the OBD 2 hardware that sucks. They have the processor and rom built in to one IC and are very expensive to keep burning and making changes. The OBD 1 ecu's are built the same way but you can make them read from an external rom. This makes it easier and cheaper to make changes.

also that damned 2cd o2 sensor. With obd one you can run a testpipe without throwing a engine code. The obd 2 ecus are a lot more tempormentall then the pre and obd1 ecu's.

Ultimately, the OBD2 chip will end up being the tuner's choice IMO. There is a lot more going on with the chip in regards engine monitoring and management. It may be a pain right now, but when somebody is finally able to reprogram the chip properly, there will be many more points of adjustability for tuners to work with. I just dunno when that's going to happen...
