whining noise from engine. (searched)
Hey guys, I've got a whining sound coming from my engine compartment. It's not constant, as in ALL THE TIME but it happens in every gear and increases in pitch with speed. Sometimes I'll be in 4th on the freeway and when traffic allows I'll give it some gas and hear just the slight sound of it coming on and as speed increases it gets louder and higher pitched. It's not the same sound as the whine you hear when reversing either.
I started searching by "Transmission whine" as that's where I thought the problem was. One thread had no resolution, but it was sorta old so I pm'd the kid and he said it was the waterpump whining for twenty thousand miles before it broke. This was after he had the tranny rebuilt twice. In other searches for just "whine" I've come across a few people saying it could be the water pump, but more people are saying it could be the timing belt being too tight. Seems to happen more when it's cold but I have heard it after driving 40 miles on the freeway and fully warmed up.
I've got a 95 DX with a JDM GSR swap mated to a B16 LSD Tranny. Before doing the swap in September, I replaced the timing belt and water pump. I drove the car for a good month before noticing the noise and it seems to have gotten louder.
Any ideas as to what it could be? I'm wondering if I might be low on coolant and it's making the water pump make noise, or the timing belt could have tightened up? It doesn't make sense as there was no noise for a month after the swap. Thanks for your input.

whats the status on your tranny fluid? checked it recently? i have heard timing belts whine when they are too tight, but thats just from the get go. not over time. you can check it for tension.
