When do you need to tune?
JW when it would benifit in power and reliablility to tune the ECU? right now on my EJ8/D16y8 I have;
2.5" SRI aem filter
2.25" DNX midpipe, magnaflow muffler
DC 4-2-1 header
Looped coolant lines
OEM cat.
I have OBD2 right now, and I know it will add up to 21% more fuel, but will OBD1 do the same? I see so many suggestions to convert to OBD1, but only figured if your heavily built. Cant OBD2 handle with just bolt ons? I have no emissions where I live either.

based on your mods i don't find it necessary to tune with just your basic bolt-ons. tuning is really only necessary when you do internal engine mods(ie cams, pistons) or forced induction. You can if you want but would net you minimal hp gains.
OBD2 uses the O2 sensor output to adjust fuel when it is idling, cruising, etc. When you go wide open throttle it runs off preset maps in the ecu, and uses no outside data from the O2 sensor, that's where the tuning would come in (open vs. closed loop). The ecu is not able to analyze and adjust for rich or lean conditions at wide open throttle, tuning would make those preset maps match your engine and what it needs. With more mods, bigger changes to these maps would be necessary, but that's not to say you won't see benefits tuning what you have now.
