Default What's involved in an engine rebuild?

My 225K mile D16 is on its last legs. What I want to know is if it would be practical or even worth it to rebuild it or just swap in a B16. It's my daily driver/weekend autocrosser so it sees a lot of action.

What all is in involved in an engine rebuild? And if I were to go this route what extras, if any, should I think about adding on? Port/Polish, etc...

The rebuild would be cheaper than the swap so that is attractive but the swap would leave me with more hp/torque which is also very attractive.

Any advice?
Evan

bearings, oil seals, and anything that is worn out. Man you might not even need one. unless you hear or feel a big difference you should just hold out for your new motor. Just tune everything adj valves, timing, spark plugs and wires. Ima sure it willl run like a champ after that.

What kind of "rebuild" do you plan on doing? At least new pistons, rod bearings, exhaust valves, valve job, valve seals, rings, and such? I wouldn't even bother unless you plan on doing it properly. It will probably need main bearings depending on how good your crankshaft is. You'll also want new rocker arms and shafts and adjusters to make the valve train nice again. It will actually be cheaper to just do a swap unless you have access to HONDA parts for cheap. You will also want new headbolts if it is a 88-91 D16- the original ones tend to stretch. Just put the money towards a swap and do basic maintenance on your D16 for now.

As for what needs to be done, if you want, replacing the engine is the cheapest solution. Personally I would rebuild the engine and make it bulletproof. This is as close to a chance as you can get to doing it so the decision is yours. For a list of things you need, you probably need to:
Resleeve
Pistons
Rods
Crank shaft
Cam shafts
valves
