Whats the best way?
AUTO-LOCK. the best way for your car to not get stolen. it'll probably get broken into, but no one will drive off with it. unless they use nitrogen on the damn thing!
Sometimes I'll pull the plug off my starter if I don't know the area well. My alarm went off today cause my radar detector fell off the windshield.

I feel that the physical theft deterrent is better than any electrical device you can think of. I can find a Lo-Hack before they can find me, and they're untrained install guys will hack your car up. I've seen them installed with duct and wood scews. I can bypass an alarm to install a turbo timer, or to start a car. Wires are easy to fix. I have 2 jumper wires that make starting most Hondas just as easy as a key. I dont have a tool that can move an autolock with the same ease.
there's no way to prevent a tow truck from towing your car in the middle of the night. unless they've been scoping your car out and want your car particularly, you're probably not going to overcome a determined theif.
however, for everything else, there's a car cover. coupled with auto-lock and/or a twin hook club, and a cheap active alarm, it'll make a pretty formidable wall for any car thief to overcome.

The consensus among those I respect in this area is this: Use as many "layers" of protection as you can.
This means utilizing kill switches, alarm sensors, EXCELLENT alarm installs, backup batteries, hood-locks with reinforcemets, parking lot cameras, motion sensing lights outside your home, physical deterrants, wheels locked to one side so tow trusks have a hard time. . . . the list goes on.
The more depth to your layers, the better protected your car is. And because there are different types of theft related to cars [audio equipment, engines/parts, externals (rims, spoilers, body kits), interior accessories, and the entire car] it becomes clear that certain layers protect each of these areas. While multiple layers overlap to protect others.
Another key to alarms is ensuring that the install is top-quality. There are many threads in the audio / security forum covering this, so read up. Knowledge is power.
