what would happen if......
ok this is something ive always wanted to know. it might be a dumb question but oh well **** it. So here goes. Lets say you have an ls motor. and you put vtec cams in it, were able to connect a vtec solenoid to it, wire it all together and use the right ecu, and whatever else a vtec engine needs to produce vtec. Would you then have vtec? I know i sound like a complete *** right now, but what exactly is different from an LS head vs. a b16 head as far as the actual cast of the head is concerned? I mean why isnt there a way to just apply vtec to a non-vtec head? Some one please inform me. Help me learn here.
i really dont know much about engine internals but doesnt vtec heads have like rocker arms that make the valves run off the big lobe? i doubt u can just throw vtec cams in and put a solenoid there.
You just explained a ls/vtec setup.. Im not sure of the maching needed to make a ls head a vtec head but I know it wouldnt be worth it..
On vtec heads there is an extra rocker for every valve(dohc) that runs on a different lobe(vtec lobe) on the cam.. When you get to a preset rpm then pins that are inside of one of the outer rockers and the vtec rocker push out to lock the 3 rockers together using oil pressure.. Thus since the vtec lobe is "bigger" than the outer rockers(low cam) it will make the valves open more and allow more fuel and air into the mix..

yeah that's a no go...there's more to it than just the cams
for the money and work just buy a whole new head...not sure if you need a new ecu

Its a good idea since there is a different fuel map in a vtec ecu over a non-vtec ecu.. Also you need a way to send 12 volts to the vtec noid at a preset rpm.. You can either get a rpm switch and retune the non-vtec ecu or just get a vtec ecu..
