Default What is MSD?

Sometimes terms are thrown around on here all sorts of which ways.

If you know a) what it stands for... b) what the heck it is basically...

I know it is something to do with your ignition (and you usually upgrade it over 400hp ). Are there aftermarket MSD's? Not sure just what its purpose is.

MSD usually refers to multiple spark discharge and that's exactly what is does. Each time the plug is "fired" there is a series of sparks not just one.

Where would it be located on the engine? is it at the end of the spark plug wires?

This is something you can upgrade to get a better spark(s), or stronger spark(s)?
