Hone, bore, same thing. Enlarging your cylinder walls by making them wider. Your cylinder is a round circle with a piston in it, you can make the hole wider by honing, you do this to increase displacement, but you need wider pistons to go in the wider cylinders.

Or if god forbid you blow your motor and scar your cylinder wall, usually you need to hone it before rebuilding.

boring and honing are not the same.you hone a block either after u overbore or to freshen-up the motor.honing is using a machine with stones attached that go up and down in the cyl.it puts a cross-hatch on the walls that help retain oil for the rings and pistons.boring the block is making the cyl.s bigger for oversize pistons.if you dont hone after boring the rings will not seat.

honing is the proces where you leave cross-hatched roughed-up surface on the walls of the cylinder... this is mainly done to seat the rings... it gives them an even smooth but rough enough surface to seat properly...

It's also done when putting the same rings back in... it allows the honed areas to either stay the same or be worn off to seat the walls so to speak...
