Default What exactly is backfire?

Is this good or bad for the engine? What can you do to correct it ?

Backfire is when the hot exhaust on a rich running engine meets oxygen outside of the exhaust system and ignites. Running leaner and/or using a catalytic converter will reduce backfiring. On my Wagon, more ignition advange reduces it too. I don't know if it's harmful.

gas in your cylinder is suppose to ignite all at once.. however if the heat from the explosion causes gas to ignite away from the flame it causes a backfire

so basically its caused by heat rather then the flame...... knock knock..
i just read that in a magazine ....

who said magazines are informative
