I had a set of tranmission gears which collected some moisture in the garage and has some noticable rust spots.

How do i remove the surface rust?
Is there a liquid chemical which is effective in removing rust?

 

WD40 and other penetrating oils work, we use MoveIt to clean rust and corrosion. 94

 

I have used Evapo-Rust with great success on many occasions. Although places like Home Depot carry other products that work decent with longer soak times:

If you can't fit it in the bucket or it is body rust the only way to remove the cancer is surgically, you must cut it out or it WILL metastasize later.



Important note, do not use on stainless steel. A reference to the movie Erin Brockovich is stated in the first movie. The dissociation of chromium from stainless becomes toxic. So, don't do it.

 

If its something you aren't worried with keeping the dimensions critical on (like cast parts, do NOT use on ground/finished faces like on a gear) you can use muriatic acid diluted with water.

It will remove rust almost immediately.
