Default welding different metals?

I was wondering if you could weld stainless steel onto cast iron? Im doing a custom turbo project and wasnt sure. I plan on welding a stainless pipe onto the exhaust side of the turbo which is cast iron. Also is it really hard to use a gassless MIG welder? this is going to be my first time useing a MIG. Ive used a ARC welder before though and its pretty easy. thanks to anyone.

In order to peoperly weld cast iron it needs to be brought (heated) up to a cherry red color then welded using a nickle rod. This is for cast to cast. Heating it up before welding eleviates the problem of residual stress due to the cooling of the weld, drawing the surrounding material to the weld causing high residual stresses which will crack with thermal cycling. I would call Natinal Welders supply and ask them if it is possible to weld to Stainless Steel in this manner. Also check with your local heavy truck repair shop. They typically try to repair the cast iron exhaust manifolds as they are really expensive to replace.

if you gonna use stainless then you need a tig welder. Mig is wire feed. Tig actually melts the metal. Tig burns at about 5000 degrees so its hot. I dont know anything about cast. Depending what you need to go....I would say sand your surface....then weld with using a tig machine.

What's the outlet of the turbine housing look like? Why can't you find or make a stainless flange for the end of your pipe, then bolt it to the turbine housing?
