How bad is it to get water in a straight thru (non chambered) muffler?

When it seeps through the louvers, does the fiberglass get wet?

Is it really BAD? Or isnt really a big deal?

 

The cat produces water sometimes and thats why sometimes you see water pouring out of a muffler. So water going in shouldn't be a problem. Unless you're holding a high pressure hose directly stuck inside the muffler.

 

Nothing to worry about, it happens too all cars. An engineer from Borla once told me that when you get a NEW exhaust system or muffler, to put about 2 tablespoons of grease the inlet of the muffler, start the car and let it idle for about 20 mins. to coat the inside of the muffler, protection against the water. Do this if you don't have a stainless steel muffler.

What if you were holding a high pressure hose directly in the muffler??

ahhhh - that would be bad.

 

I actually have a plastic bag and rubber band that I put over my pipe when washing the car, anyone else? Mine is tilted downward so water would sit in it if I got it in there and it's 2 1/2" so it would catch a lot of H20.

how is it bad? like, would the sound not be as muffled causing exhaust to be extremely loud? maybe raspy?

it would be bad since a high pressure hose would force water into area's in the exhaust system where water is not meant to be.... By high pressure hose, I dont mean a garden hose.... I mean a power washer type hose.... anyhow thats my 0.02 $

OK lets have a little fun here.

Good ol gasoline has a hydrogen to carbon ratio of about 1.85 lets call it 2. That means for every carbon atom there is 2 hydrogen atoms in our fuel. Close enough as iso-octane is C8H18 if my memory is correct.

So in that ol combustion chamber iso-octane meets oxygen approximately according to:

3 O2 + 2 CH2 ---&gt; 2 CO2 + 2 H20 (N2 omitted)

Low and behold what is that we find on the right? Water, good ol steam. So our exhaust contains a rather large proportion of Nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water. That water dripping from your muffler is good old combustion by products. Nothing to worry about.

This thread made me remember my childhood, when I was 7 yrs old. I used to push a garden hose up the exhaust of my uncle's delivery van and fill the exhaust with water, then pull it out and watch the flood of black water......this was in the 50's before catalysts. Never hurt a thing and won't now. Unless you flood a hot catalyst and crack it, of fill it enough to hydrolock the engine.
