vtec working properly?
I have a 1st gen b16a in a 91 crx si. The car runs good and pulls hard but I cannot hear the vtec at all. I also have a b16a2 in a 95 si and when the vtec kicks in it makes a huge difference in sound. In the crx, nothing. The intake and exhaust setups are the same on both cars. I have no codes, all the electricals are definetly good, and I have oil pressure on the port by the vtec solenoid when I'm suppose to. Everything seems 100% but I can't hear a difference at all, not even a little bit.

The crx has a thermal exhaust and aem short ram, and I can't hear or feel the vtec. The 95 si with a b16a2 has an Apexi WS exhaust and aem short ram and when vtec engages, it's loud and, in first and second, you can feel the difference. How can I know for sure that the vtec is working in the crx?
you can always meter the ECM's VTEC wire. Watch for it to show 12v's when it's suppose to... this is a pain in the way, and best done with someone else in the passengers seat watching the meter.
this is how my first gen b16 is also. so what i did was unplugged the spool and drove it to see if there was a difference - and there was. now obviously you'll throw a code and have your redline lowered but specifically look for the difference at 5krpms. this convinced me that it was working. i also made a vtec light (no harassment please...) and with that i can hear what vtec is supposed to sound like. and yes, it is very difficult to hear (on my setup that is).
