Default vtec- whats the same?

Is the short block the same in a vtec engine as a non-vtec engine. Is it possible to just swap the top end. If not, can the whole non-vetc engine be swapped with a vtec engine and what other mods have to be done. I have a 93 civic dx and want to upgrade the engine. I'm new to the honda concept so any help would be great.

Are you just saying that you want to add VTEC to ur DX motor? Or do you wanna build like an LSVTEC? I'm actually not sure if the non VTEC SOHC block is the same as the D16Z6 as far as the oil routing goes. On the DOHC blocks like the LS they are not plumbed internally for VTEC therefore you will have to add an external oil line. If you do just plan to add VTEC to ur DX block i would recommend just finding a SOHC VTEC or just getting a simple B16A!! have fun.

if your wanting to know if a SOHC VTEC head will bolt up to your DX block (D15B), yes it will; and yes you'll need a SOHC VTEC ecu/ecm (P28) to control vtec operations. Wiring will be required too.
