Default Vtec Problem

P61 ECU, B17A1 OBD0-1 conversion in a 1990 STD hatch.

I checked the solenoid and it works. The Vtec will not switch on by itself. Could the VSS not be functioning? I tried to hook it to the positive wire on my Autometer shift light, but it keeps a constant 12v activating the Vtec on startup. Is there another way I can do this?

The vtec will work if I hook 12v to the solenoid. It will not work when I drive the car. I may have a VSS problem.

Umm is your speed showing on your gauge cluster, if so you probably dont have a VSS problem.

Yes, but i did my own OBD0-1 conversion, I didn't use an aftermarket harness. Every thing is wired right, but the Vtec just will not work. I'ts got oil, the conections are good....I'm stumped at this point.

When I got the engine the knock sensor was broken. If this does not have a good connection will this cause the Vtec to malfunction?

It may cause you to go into limp mode (I dont think it will actually) but I know it's not one of the determining factors of the ECU switching into VTEC. There is a huge VTEC check list, search for it, things like engine oil level, dents in oil pan, temp, speed sesor, and solenoid but you said that works already.

I have a check engine light, but I need to know how to modify the ECU so I can make the light flash. My car is OBD0 and my conversion was OBD1.

Get a continuity light, ground the light properly, and stick the other end in the A13 pinout. That is the OBD1 pinout for the CEL.

Or, wire it up in your dash so you have the proper light in your gauge cluster for the CEL to light up like OBD1.

Hmm, as for making out the code, you do not have a service connector. I'm stumpted on that one at this point.

I know the brown wire (which is the D4 pinout) is for the service connector, I'm not sure what the other wire is, however.

HTH

edit -- what's the other wire at the service connector again? katman help me out here
