Default VTec Kicks In Too EARLY??

Hey, I ran an LED to the VTec solenoid next to the valve covers and placed it behind the gauges, it lights up whenever my VTec kicks in..... too my surprise, it comes on every gear at 2500 RPM?? No VTec controller or anything... would it be the previous owner of my car programmed it this way? Would this hurt the car since VTec requires lotsa oil pressure?

if VTEC engages too early, the valve opens too long and what not, so the compression in each cylinder will not be as great due to blowby. Reason for the high lift, duration cams is due to the inertia of the air, at high rpm, you have to open earlier and longer to fill the cylinders, using the same cams at low rpm would result in imporper filling of the cylinders, sure you'll get air in but the piston is already moving up, releasing some air before it closes.....

it's weird because VTEC is dependant on a couple things to engage, are there any electronics in the car, ECU and what not?

Perhasp you rigged the LED incorrectly.

ok.. mr grasshopper is way too complex for me

first off - if vtec engages that early, youll know b/c itll bog like hell...

also, just punch it and se if vtec kicks in (4800). you should feel or hear it..

all in all.. i agree with mr hornet - wired wrong..

good luck

It could be kicking in the second stage of VTEC at 2500rpm. Thats why his light is coming on...

VTEC-E is only on Civics HX, i think. but yes, IT does kick in at about 2500

Just wanted to make a point to Ricehornet..That would be called Valve overlap, not blow-by.

Blow by is where your piston rings can't contain the compression, and it just blown by.

but yes, I concur...it is probably wired incorrectly..

Three Stage VTEC
From: Shawn Church
First of all, despite being 16 valves, there is really only one cam lobe for operation in the first two stages. This is supplemented by the high lift center lobe (like in the normal DOHC VTEC). The second intake valve rocker, however, simply rides along a zero lift ring in place of the usual lobe on the cam shaft.

To activate the second stage at 2500 rpm(both valves opening), oil pressure is diverted into a channel that drives a pin which connects intake valve rocker #1 with #2. Now, both intake valves are being operated in unison. This is perhaps not quite as ideal as a little valve stagger (as seen in the DOHC VTEC apps), but sufficient enough for good power.

To enter the third stage, at 6000 rpm, oil is now allowed into a second channel connecting all the rocker arms. This oil drives a pin which connects the linked #1 and #2 rockers to the center lobe actuated #3 rocker which is, of course, the high lift and duration mode.
Where does it say anything about about VTEC-E with DOHC?

O/T - If you do not call it blow-by when valve-overlap occures if FI, what do you call then?

Hey, all yall vtec-rs oil is a important part of vtec. Some make sure your oil is clean dont want to get the soleniod stuck open.

yea he got a HX model have to be. Oil pressure isnt up to even take advantage the vtec, second my mans vtec soleniod got stuck open and the once it reached pressure it locked the third valve about 4000 and it just boggged tell like 6000 which was a hard problem to fix. Luckly i had a GSR head that i was shipping out , and tried the soleniod on it, and it worked. If not for that we would have been lost. Be he did change his oil like talking about it , but what can you do with spoiled hard head kids with deap pocket parents.. **** he threw a rod, and parents just bought him a RSX,, crazyness.

88_SC_CRX_Si, there is no DOHC VTEC-E engines. they are all SOHC and made for fuel economy in mind only.

I know there is no VTEC-E in a DOHC. hehehe In the orginal post, he was asking why his light was coming on at 2500. I said it was the second stage. Some one else mentioned the VTEC-E.... Thats why I did the "quote". In my question "Where do you see DOHC VTEC-E mentioned....
