Default VTEC

Hey guys, you should tell me how the VTEC on Honda/Acura engines work. sorry if this sounds n00bish, flame if you will, but i just wanna know how it works and what exactly it does, i know it increases performance, but how and how does it work?

So far the best VTEC FAQ site I have seen is http://www.leecao.com/honda/vtec/whatsvtec.html It's easy to understand, has pics, and actually explains what causes VTEC to engage and disengage and isn't very general like most sites are about it.
