Default VSS CEL. installing vtec

The car is an 89 CRX. I've used non-vtec engines in it so far, but am about to put a vtec in! My problem is a cluster swap that was done a while ago. I swapped in a cluster from a 90-91 CRX. I used this guide: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=709958 and it was very helpful! It describes which wires do what on both the dash harness that is in my car and in the new cluster so I was able to rewire everything in the correct order. But, if you've ever taken apart a crx gauge bezel, you'd see that on the back of the gauge cluster there are 4 things connected. The two plugs as pictured and described in that guide(link above), the vehicle speed sensor cable(that goes through the firewall and into the VSS inside the transaxle), and lastly(the problem) a small 3-4 wire clip. The reason its a problem is because DUH its not in the guide anywhere! haha.... so you compare the wire colors between my dash harness and the dash harness that the cluster came from... which are completely different and one has 3 wires with an empty pin, the other has 4. So, you check for wiring diagrams to compare the differences, but my haynes manual says this: "Since it isn't possible to include all wiring diagrams for every year covered by this manual, the following diagrams are those that are typical and most commonly needed." I've got a check engine light for VSS(code 17) and I suspect that the problem plug is what the ECU uses to check vehicle mph. Which will be a problem when I want to use my newly installed vtec tonight or tomorrow and the ECU checks for 17mph to engage vtec. HELP!!!

problem solved!
using the diagrams and pictures in the link i posted above, it says "not used" where the VSS goes because in the write-up he is converting to electronic VSS.
but really, the yellow wire with the red stripe goes into the second slot on this clip:
