VANOS is short for VAriable NOckwellen Steuerung. The original VANOS system varied the valve timing on the intake cam. Unlike VTEC, it does not vary lift. The double-VANOS system found on newer BMW's varies valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams. These adjustments are infinite within their ranges of operation and help to provide the broad, flat torque curve for which BMW's are known.

Perhaps more interesting is the the latest from BMW: a system called VALVETRONIC. It has been on the European economy Bimmers for a couple years and has now come to America in the new 7-series. It is a throttle-less intake with infinitely variable intake valve timing and lift. So when you step off of the "throttle" pedal, the valves simply don't open as much to keep air out.
