Default Smart Valve

Has anyone used these? Sounds interesting...

Impressive! It is basically giving more intake valve advance. Intake of air occurs earlier if needed, and it does so depending on engine load.

From looking at the graphs, the most significant change in power & torque is similar to the common practice of advancing the intake camshaft.

Horsepower & Torque are plenty in the lowend & midrange, but as you get in the highend, Tq takes a big dive.. which is the same thing as advancing the intake camshaft.

The biggest advantage, in my opinion, is..
The user can run with a retarded intake camshaft to correct the 'dive' in the highend torque, and this 'floating' seat system would still benifit the lowend. It might take away some of the lowend, but I imagine that there would still be plenty of it.

Exhaust side
Im confused on this part. Im trying to figure out why the 'floating' seats can't be used on the exhaust valves. Seems more complicated. With the 'floating' seat system being backward (blowing out), everything would escape during the ignition of the air/fuel mixture. Also, using the seat system like the Intake side (floating inward) would be wrong too.. because as the piston goes down, the cylinder would be getting Intake through the exhaust system also ..lol, im confused. Maybe wrong about the cycle(s) here. Perhaps someone with direct knowledge of 4 stroke cycle can figure out if the 'floating seats' can be used on the exhaust valves. They would have to move at the right point and not interfere with combustion.

come to think of it.. Have you ever noticed the small lobes (primary) on a vtec cam? ..they are NOT the same size. They have different lift & duration.

Honda might already have this thing beat. Variable valve timing for lowend is already on the camshaft.

That is to promote swirl inside the combustion chamber to help with low end torque.

The timing events for B, D, F, and H series VTEC low/ high cams are set and are not dynamic. The Smart Valves allow for a more flexible timing event among individual cylinders. It is now also possible to tune out, or further smooth the dip when the lobe changeover occurs.

..comparing the primary lobes, they have different duration & lift. This means that the valve timing between two lobes will differ. This can be considered as variable valve timing right ..even tho it is set.

Would be considered "variable" cam timing, in that the motor shifts between the 2 cam profiles based on a given rpm. The cams can vary the lift and duration of the valves during 2 phases, first being at low cam, and the 2nd at hot cam.

..cool. What about the exhaust side? Will AATAP offer "variable" valve timing for the exhaust?

That is being looked into for the future. Right now, the focus is on the intake side.
