.Ok so I have an LS-V with GSR head/cams that I got and took it apart because was not sure of the condition of the motor. When the head came off I can see were the Intake valves were hitting the pistons. There is a perfect grove on all the pistons. The valves look fine as far as I can tell. It had the stock head gasket also. My question is why are the valves are hitting the pistons. I thought there should be more clearance.

Is the arrow pointing toward the crank pulley and is the IN on the Intake side? Was your head ticking before? Kinda weird though, seems like if the valves were kissing the pistons there's be more carnage instead of the perfect grooves. Ask the person you got it from what the hell he did.
see if you can findout if the engin ever broke a timeing belt if it did then it mostlikely hit the piston. was the motor making any noise befor you took it apart?

timing belt was on when i got the motor and i never hear it run so not sure how it sounded or any thing. Its funny becasue its perfect and it dont look like any thing serious happen other than what you see on the pistons. But like Goldeneagle said maybe the reliefs are not big enough on the ls piston for the Vtec valves?
just because the belt was on when you got it dosent meen it dident break a timeingbelt sometime in its life and hit the valves. the valve shouldent be that close to the piston. i would put it together and see if you can turne it over by hand ifso then it should be ok but you wont know till you start it up. goodluck

you may be able to take a die grinder and open them up and see if that helps. i know people do it when the pistons are out of the motor but i dont know about in the motor, just have to be careful to clean up all the dust and shavings
also looks like there not hitting it much maybe you could get a thicker head gasket from cometic also. im trying to give you suggestions if its your daily driver and you need it running, but the best way exspecially if your gonna upgrade cams in tha future is to do what golden eagle said and swap the pistons
