Default valve timing / camchaft timing

i saw some tunner used the dial gauge to check the valve timing... why they do that ??? how about just adjust the timing by the adj cam gear without checking the timing with the dial gauge ? thanx

It's called degreeing the cams, and it is done to make sure that they are set so that the valves open and close according to the manufacturers specs. That way you know where you are as far as timing goes, and can adjust from there.
