Valve Spring Install: Removal of head necessary?
Is this necessary to do a good job? I would like to replace my valve springs but not remove the head, then i'll have to change the head studs and head gasket etc. What is the standard when doing this operation? Thanks.
Welp i'm not sure about a VTEC head, I know the rocker design is different. But on non-VTEC heads you can just use an air compressor to pressureize the cylinders. That way when you remove the valve springs the valves will be held in place.
it's not completely necessary, but it sure is a hell of a lot easier.
There are a couple of ways to avoid taking the head off. You can pressurize the cylinder, as mentioned, but you have to make sure all your valves are seated well, and your rings are in good condition.. Or some people have suggested you insert a length of nylon rope into the cylinder through the spark plug hole, until there is enough there to support the valve. Or just make sure the piston you are working on is at TDC. The valve won't be able to drop down in to the combustion chamber all the way at least...
