Default Valve Spring Identification

A while ago, I replaced my stock valve springs/ret with aftermarket springs/ti-retainers. Does anyone remember how the stock springs are oriented in the head of an H22? One end of the springs are painted and the other side has the coils wound tight towards the end.

Also, half(8) of the outer springs are slightly different than the other 8 outer springs. The wire diameters on 8 of them are smooth and the others have a slight ridge.

i believe the ones that are painted are the intake springs....and of course the smaller springs go inside those.

All the springs are painted on one end.

Honda OE springs are usually progressively wound. The tigher coils should go to the bottom.

Here is a prelude spring. Notice the tighter coils on the bottom.

Is that the intake or exhaust spring ? There is a slight difference in the shape of the wire diameter (one is ridged, one smooth) for the outer springs. All 16 inner springs look the same but they have different part numbers for intake and exhaust.

The spring pictured is diamond shape (square instead of round.) I am pretty sure it's an intake.

Did you ever measure what the seat/open pressure was for the Prelude springs ?

I did but at B series specs at 1.320" installed height. I'll have to look at my notes for the numbers. The prelude spring's I.D. is actually a littler smaller than the B-Series.

It would be interesting to see how OEM rates compare to aftermarket spring rates (even though aftermarket springs have to usually deal with more cam lift/duration).
Thanks for the spring ID in the post above.

B Series Spring Rates

Most aftermarket springs have tipically have the following rates.

60-70lbs on the seat
200-240 at 12mm lift.

Stock is roughly

55lbs on the seat
165 at 11mm lift

These OEM Type-S springs should approach aftermarket rates.
More reliable to.
