Default Valve clearance questions

1. When doing an adjustment how can I find TDC if my head has been milled and with aftermarket cam gears?

2. If the clearances are on the tight side, would this cause idle fluctuations (800-200-800)?

TDC for the bottom end doesn't change with a milled head but you'll want to see a little advance for the cam since it will be retarded. (this is not necessary though since a degree or two won't make you miss the heel of the cam lobe for valve lashing purposes).

Tight lash will cause some motors to idle poorly.

here is a trick that i used for mine, you take out number one spark plug, stick a screw driver in there. turn the crank over and watch for the screw driver to come up. you will also hear air come out of ther before it comes all the way up. but remember there is the intake stroke and the exhaust stroke. usually the intake stroke pushes out more air so it is a little louder then the exhaust stroke. you can also take the distributer cap off, and just turn the crank until your rotor points to where the number one plug wire is on the distributer cap. Also remember to turn your crank counter clockwise when doing this. And i am srprised that your cam gear doesn't have any markings for TDC. Mine has a 0 then it has negative degrees marked and positive degrees marked. if yours does put it at 0 and make sure your crank is at the TDC mark on the block and the timing pulley behind the crank pulley. good luckand i hope this helps gloria
