Default True Defenition of TDC

Did valve adjustment over the weekend - first time, went well . I have the helms and about 6 different "How To's" from different sites that I used to guide me through. I have one question , when I was turning the crank 180deg for the 90deg duration of the cam sprockets for bank 1 I noticed that when the 2 small markers match up perfect for both intake/ext that the two arrows are not pointing straight up, but maybe to the slight left. When I turned it back so they face up the smaller markers abviously were not lined up anymore. I found this strange only because there was a considerable difference in the valve clearence between the two. This is a B18c1 01' GSR used - what "should" I be going by , the arrows or the small indentions on the cam sprockets ? I went ahead with the small marks and seems fine but could be a little more quite when cold - could my timing be off ? or possibly already advanced/retard by the previous owner ? THANKS !!

Anyone ... ?
like in the first pic - the arrows appear to be to the left , and I asume the marks are lined up - this is bank 1

bank 3 seems to be the same way -

But check out bank 4 - you can plainly see that the small indention is NOT lined up and the marks on the sprocket spoke is straight up

and then last bank 2 seems a little to the left

heres another pic of a B18c at TDC
http://hazone.com/howto/pva006.jpg again a little to the left
And heres the helms instruction -

FYI - I did not locate the marks on the crank pulley due to visability , only on cam sprocks - Hope pics help exsplain my question !

TDC means Top Dead Center, meaning the piston is at the very top of its stroke.

Your cam gears "up" markings look off because the motor is tilted forward.

So we should go by the markings on the pulleys, then?
