Are VAFC's shit?
OK bought my JDM Ferio EG9 with a VAFC.
I heard they are not very good with the standard ECU because when you take fuel out, the ECU retards timing and your car actually loses power.
Is this just an urban myth or fact?
Cheers

When you "take out fuel" you are lowering the MAP sensor signal to the ECU. This causes the ECU to look to a lower load point on both the fuel and ignition maps. Lower load point means less fuel, but usually means more ignition timing. It's the #1 reason why the VAFC hack on a boosted car doesn't work too well.
Uberdata turns your OBD1 ECU into a full standalone and everything needed for it is a fraction of the cost of an AFC. TurboEDIT is the same, for OBD0 cars. Those are the direction you would be best off going towards if you are on a budget; you can't tune a car razor sharp with an AFC.
