Default VAFC on a non OBD car

I searched and found some guy who said they put a VAFC into a 91 CRX, but i was looking at Apexi's application chart and it only had 92+ cars so i didn't know if it would work. The reason i ask is my friends got a GSR in his 88 CRX running just the PR3 ECU, it needs a little tuning and i'm just making sure that a VAFC will work in a non OBD car. We also need to raise his rev limit a few hundred RPM so would there be any problems running a Mugen 1 or PYR chip and the VAFC. Thanks in advance.
