I am trying to figure out which to go with? Both do pretty much the same thing for my B18C. I am not to familar with programming and adjusting the VTEC and fuel curves. I am definitely willing to learn them though, but where would I get most of my power gain? VAFC or the chip? I will be runing the OBD1 P72. Also, how will this effect emissions? I live in the second worst state for emissions, and that is MA. Let me know what you all think...
Since you are worried about emissions (I say GOOD for you) I would recommended chipping it. Reason being that chipping you can change chips relatively easily. And some states will not let you pass visual with a VAFC as it is not a certified electronic device for modifing engines. Also if you ever dyno tune you can be far more specific with your tuning and even can tuning POT for crusing so you can still get good MPG.
Don't get one of those Ebay chips for your ecu,all they do is make your car run rich and give you crappy gas mileage.A VAFC street tuned with a wideband works very well,, I had one on my 99SI.If you get someone that really knows what there doing you can get good results.Put in your glovebox if your worried about it being seen.

vafc for light modifications. If you do more than intake and exhaust I would say go with a chipped ecu. The reason I say this is that a vafc controller is a piggy back system and tricks the ecu. This can be harmful because you can only adjust the fuel and you will have the wrong timing at the wrong rpm.
actually a VAFC changes the map readings to get less fuel. the problem is this also changes timing. (depending on what is in the maps)
Not a big deal until you happen to hit a large change in the map, then things can get bad quickly.
IMO, OBD1 ECU + tuned maps for anything over bolt-ons. Anything less than that you're better off with the stock maps anyway.

P72 with crome. All you need to do is socket the ecu and run a 256k chip with a basemap. Then go to a tuner and get tuned.
Crome is free and a hell of alot better than any bs vafc.
