Default V-TEC is over rated

hello everyone, im building a DC2 Ls for my little bro and was wondering if the B20 non vtec would be a better power plant over the 1.8? also for a few more hund. i could have the B16. The idea is to install a comblete turbo setup. for the price of a Type R, a turbo would put a bigger chip on your shoulder. this will be his everyday driver so i want stock internals so he can get it fixed anywhere. Peace.

The B20 is most definitely an upgrade vs the B18A/B18B. I upgraded from a B18B to a B20 several years ago. And I was amazed at how big of a difference that small displacement and compression increase made. Just keep in mind that the B20 is not the best block for boost, though. If you want more displacement, you would be better off resleeving the B18 if you are going to boost.

if vtec is overrated then why are you considering a b16?

If there is nothing wrong with your b18a/b block, why would you want to waste the money on another motor that your going to leave stock and turbo? I say keep the b18.

This is a good point. I personally find the B18 to be rather limp-wristed when it comes to torque. But that's in allmotor form. If you are boosting, why bother changing.

garage 808 hatch has the nice idea, 300whp with a nice flat linear torque curve is what i would do.

Do the 1.8L if you've got it.

Same crank and rods as the B20 with slightly thicker sleeves. That means... a few more lbs. of boost. That will make up for the lack in displacement if you are on e a budget.

And like Garage 808 said, do rod bolts while you have the chance. Rev that bottom end to 8000 rpm safely. Next upgrade could be VTEC head or springs retainers/cams for the LS head.

On a side note... VTEC isn't exactly overrated. Take a stock LS and turbo it. Take a stock GSR and turbo it. All things being equal, the GSR cams are bigger and the head flows better to make much nicer power.
