What the heck makes the LSVTEC so unreliable to some people? Is this coming from people that built one wrong or know someone that built one wrong? Personally I am building one the right way and not cutting any corners on this engine. Someone breaks a rod cuz they didn't have the rods checked for straightness or didn't have the rod beams balanced. Someone doesn't get new bearings and wonders why the engine blew. Someone revs it up too high and cracks the cylinder walls and could've got a block guard. Someone has bottom end failure cuz they didn't have the bottom end balanced. Did I cover all of the problems or did I miss something? (I know there is more to some of these examples, but that is too much to right)

I only said block guard cuz I am trying to keep the budget down, but that would be a contradiction since I said "I am not cutting any corners." Does sleeving make the engine more reliable? How much does it usually cost? Where do I get the sleeves?

missing crank girdle
just a side note: a girdle doesn't make the bottom end stronger, it just distributes the load. You wouldn't want one bearing wearing out faster than the others. With the girdle installed correctly, the bearings will wear out more evenly.

I hate to bring this topic back up, but what is the best cable tranny to use with the ls/vtec? Planning on revving it to about 8500rpm.

my friends B20 has High Compression Forged Pistons. we took his block apart last week because he spun a bearing. i looked at his pistons and it looks like there were pieces of metal bouncing on the pistons. this was detonation because of improper tuning when he first built the motor.
my point is that CTR pistons will yield a high compression and if he would've had CTR pistons, they probably would have cracked because of the detenation. you previously asked about a reliable LS/VTEC, get forged pistons.

although i personally don't think that LS/VTEC's last. i don't know one person in the NY area that street races on occasion and has had a LS/VTEC for more then 1 year. everyone says that it has to be built and tuned properly. i think they only say that because THEY WANT YOUR MONEY. i don't expect a race motor to last forever but DAMN, these guys are always blowing up.

no, i don't want to put my money where my mouth is and i'm not trying to offend anyone. i'm stating what i've seen.

i have a friend who has been building his LS/VTEC with quality parts and has taken all the precautions to build his motor "properly" (ie, balancing, bore, hone, polished crank, blueprint, new bearings, etc.). i hope he is the one that proves me wrong because a lot of time, money and love (haha) has been put into the motor. i guess i'll have to wait and see.....

if have heard that a million times. i know of a couple of well known shops in NY that build Ls/Vtecs knowing that they will not last. they tell the same tale, "build it right and it will last".
i've heard that Booga of BITS Racing has a guarantee on the motor he builds. i don't know if it's true but that is something i would look into if i wanted an Ls/Vtec.
