Type R trans bearing confversion
Ok here's the whole deal i bought a type r trans with a kazz lsd (had tapered roller bearings) then the kazz like exploded because of wheel hop. So i bought a type r lsd from someone here on honda-tech. Since i messed up one of the tapered roller bearings when trying to transfer them to the type r lsd, i bought 2 sealed bearings. When i put the lsd in the casing to try to measure what 80mm (tapered had 79.5mm) shim to use, it looks like i need two of them. All the shop manuals i have are from 95 and use the tapered bearings. Also at the honda dealership in an si trans with the sealed bearings it looks like they only use one shim.
.........Has anyone else ran into this problem and if there are saposed to be two shims if so can someone give me an idea of the sizes they used.
......Also if there are two do they both go on the top casing ( one with the snap ring in it. )
..........If theres only one shim is there gonna be a little amount of play.
Thanks in advance

Without a shim in there, how much clearance did you measure? It'll give you an idea of how thick of a shim to get.
It wasn't that accurate for me when I did it that way, but it'll give you an idea of where to start. After getting the shim that I thought I would need to hit a .003" thrust clearance, I found that it was still too loose by .007". I got another shim to take up the extra clearance.
I'm still not sure why the initial measurement put me so far away from the target clearance.

yeah i was already at the tranny overhaul link but my trans was still different. today i went to the dealership and found out that there is another spacer at the bottom in addition to the 80mm one on the top. this only applies to type r trans not gsr or b16. thanks though

I would try and find a later manual. The 98 (or 99 - can't remember) and later GSR/ITR use the sealed bearings, not the tapered. The shimming procedure - and probably the shims too - will differ depending on which bearing type you're using.
