type R O2 sensor hook up

sorry bout this...i wouldnt be suprised if this gets knocked down to the newbie forum. but anyways, i had to get a new sensor for the type R headers which means that i had to splice . i tried that clip-on thing-a-ma-jig so that i wouldnt have to cut into my new sensor wires.
now theres 4 wires on the new sensor....2 black. a white, and a green. i was told to ignore the two black wires, and hook up the white and the green, and that it didnt matter which o2 wire was hooked up to the green and which one was hooked to the white. Now the problem is im still getting the check engine light from it.
Am i doing something wrong? should i just forget the clip-on-thingeez and just splice the wires the old fashion way? TIA
