Default tuing a car, where should base timing be

i have a all motor ls/vtec about to go get it tuned.... should i set my timing to factory spec because i heard that tuning will controls my timing advance via ecu neway so i should prob set it to stock right????? its slightly retard right now due to high compression i didnt want to blow it up?? during break in and the fact it was untuned... but once its tuned it will be controled by my ecu neway right? lil help on this please im going to dyno verry soon STOCK OR LEAV IT RETARDED

set base timing to match timing maps from the ecu(usually 16.5)
